After Effects crash when "color depth" switched to 16 bit
on Feb 15, 2014 at 8:57:41 pm

Hi Guys,

AE imports my QT Ref correctly, but when I try to switch the composition settings from 8 bit per channel to 16 bit per channel, AE systematically crashes... (The AE picture preview turns black, and then AE crashes)

Note: the QT Ref is an AVID export.

The reason I'm trying to switch color depth is because I want to create a DCP. I am trying to do so via OpenDCP, but this tutorial requires that the color depth be 16 bit:

I hope someone can help me :)

Try using an actual QT movie instead of a QT Ref.

You don't need to convert to 16-bit. OpenDCP will accept 8-bit.

I've tried using an actual QT movie (Avid DNxHD codec) instead of a QT Reference and the problem stays the same: AE crashes when I try to switch to 16bpc...

I understand OpenDCP accepts 8-bit, but I want to upscale my film size from 1920x1080 to 3996x2160(4K) and loose as little quality as possible in process.

Is your source 16-bit or 8-bit? If it's 8-bit, then leave it at 8-bit. If your material is 2K, it's most likely going to look better shown at 2K rather than an upscale to 4K. It will also be smaller and faster to render.

Thank you Terrence, so I will leave my footage at 8bit and only upscale my frame size from 1920x1080 to 2K (1998x1080).

As a result, I will be making a DCP with the following specs:
- 8 bits of color per channel
- 2K (1998x1080)
- 25fps

You don't have to change your image aspect either, you can keep it at 1920x1080 and it will show fine using the flat mode. You'll end up with 39 pixels of black on both sides which most people wont even notice. Just another option.

OK great, I'll leave it at 1920x1080 as suggested.

Thanks again for your insights.

Would you be willing to send us a small example file that causes this crash?

You can send a bug report with attachments to aebugs (at) adobe [dot] com.
