I'm interested in doing vfx work and also doing film, but i have a laptop that is only alright and a crappy point and shoot camera that cost 150 dollars. So, should I buy a good dslr such as a canon rebel t2i, or get a decent computer for video editing and vfx???
I don't think anyone can answer this question but you.
If you are serious about both disciplines, you'll eventually need both a reasonable system that at least meets the minimum system requirements for the software you want to run, as well as some way to acquire your footage.
Don't forget that both cameras and computers can be rented as needed.
If you're just starting, I'd say that putting in some time to learn is more important than buying stuff right now. Start by creating a small project for yourself. You'll learn a lot doing it and it may help your prioritize.
