So I subscribe to After Effects Tutorials with Mikey Borup and he is doing a give away with AE Sweets (http://gimmyit.com/giveaway/sweet-after-effects-giveaway/) and it looks really cool. I am about to do a pretty big motion graphic project with animations and I want it to look really good because this will be the biggest project that I have done with After Effects ever.

My question is if something like AE sweets is worth it if I don't know much about how to animate things or should I just find what it is I want to do and then learn how to do it on my own?

I wouldn't do it. Who the &*(^)&*(^%$*% IS Mikey Alsop?

That certainly looks shady to me. The actual Sweets plugin is free, then you buy the various packs which work within it. And there's a 7 day or 30 runs trial available for free, so check it out:

I tried the beta when it first came out, and found it useful enough that I bought it with a few of the design packs. Yes...it's also something you should learn to do without a plugin, but it can save you time when you're under the gun.

I thought I would chime in on this, This is Mikey (the guy putting on the giveaway) this isn't shady. I've been working with the developers for this giveaway to do on my YouTube channel.

As far as sweet being free, sure but you can't do anything with out the packs, and this giveaway is for all of the packs, (all 11 of them) which are not free.

So, feel free to sign up or not for the giveaway, but I assure you that prizes are real, and worth $128 per complete set. (i'm giving away 5 sets)

Questions of legitimacy aside, in answer to your second question, it's almost always better to learn how to do something the "hard" way before looking for an automated solution. That way you know WHY things happen and can control them instead of trusting to an external source and hoping for the best. The whole "teach a man to fish" theory.
