Long scene keying/tracking

Hello guys. Just finished up watching a load of tutorials on blood spatters etc and some light keyframe and tracking.
I have a scene (several in fact) that are roughly a minute long each. It's a one vs one swordfight with no cuts. The camera pans along X,Y and Z a lot as it tracks the fighters. Is there a way to set a tracking grid to the floor so I can place and track blood spots? I heard that it can be done in an actual recording session by placing reference points. This, however, is rendered game footage, so any difference? I feel this a a lot of work, but hell, I'm going to dive right in anyway
