Trying to make this type effect

I keep seeing this type of effect. I'm pretty good at AE but don't even know how to get started making a video like this. Is it laid out in Ai first and then animated in AE? What is this effect called and are there any tutorials on how to get started? thanks

There is no one-size-fits all answer to this, but you're on the right track with AE and Ai. This is not so much a category of video as it is a design style that's very "in" right now. You can lay out Ai frames and then build the animation around those, or you can also take a bunch of pieces you like and start testing different ways to combine them in AE. There is often a bit of Cinema 4d (or other 3d package) utilized for the more dimensional elements, and flash is also sometimes used. And perhaps even a bit of plexus in your example.

I've seen some interesting resources at https://mattrunks.com/en that may help.

Best,

thanks so much! One more question. How do I get that look in C4D? Is it the sketch and toon or something like that? Where there is no shading. I know this isnt the forum for that so thanks in advance.

There may be shaders or plugins for that, but you can also do it by playing with your material settings. i.e., max out the ambient level and drop specular and diffuse all the way down. Experimentation is key!

Looks like some judicious use of Newton [link] for the physical simulation, too.

You can achieve totally flat lighting in C4D by adding any light and enabling "Ambient Illumination" in the light's general properties. You can get some sense of depth back without creating shadows by turning on "Falloff" in the details tab, which reduces the intensity of the light as you get farther away from the source.

This type of work is typically found in Infographics videos.

Other than those tools already mentioned, AE's Shape Layers and Text Tool are also integral to creating such works. The following video is a work-in-progress that I created entirely using Shape Layers and the Text Tool - http://www.broadcastGEMs.com/MediaScreamer01/bGEMs_MoGraphIntensity_Promo_M...
