Because of the number of effects and nested layers I need to render a flat pass which I will bring back into AE to grab tracking data with the Tracker. Can anyone recommend a CPU friendly codec? I understand that H.264 is fairly heavy on the CPU and I need to be able to play back HD content in era time on my 2 yr old iMac.

Jim,

I would recommend an intra-frame codec, like ProRes.

Maybe PNG sequence?

PSD sequences are super cpu friendly - filesizes can balloon out of control though, so just keep that in mind.

Thanks
So I guess some type of image sequence , either tiff, png or perhaps DPX would be my best bet.
