I'm able to render in H.264, yet unable to render AVIs (with no adjusted settings). What do I do? Is this a codec problem?

Here's what rendered footage looks like:

The latest version of Windows Media -- or whatever they call it -- does not play nicely with AE. If you want to deliver an AVI, use Adobe Media Encoder to make the h.264 of your AE work (works MUCH better than making h.264 in AE), and THEN use something else to make the AVI.

Personally, I wouldn't go to h.264 AT ALL unless it was for final delivery. I'd make something lossless like a QT in the PNG codec, and then transcode it into AVI.

Please post your AVI export settings. What is the source footage?

Render Settings
Quality: Best
Resolution: Full
Disk Cache: Read Only
Porxy Use: Use No Proxies
Effects: Current Settings
Solo Switches: Current Settings
Guide Layers: All Off
Color Depth: Current Settings
Frame Blending: On for Checked Layers
Fiel Render: off
Motion Blur: On for Checked Layers
Time Span: Work Area Only

Use Comp's frame rate: 29.97

Format: AVI
In Format Options I selected None for Video Codec
Channel: RGB
Depth: Millions of Colors
Color: Premultiplied (Matted)
Checked Audio Output
48 kHz
16 bit
Stereo

The original file I was rendering was a .MTS file (AVCHD Video), 1440 by 1080. I really need this format to work because one of my cameras records in this format.

[Chris Kay] "The original file I was rendering was a .MTS file (AVCHD Video), 1440 by 1080. I really need this format to work because one of my cameras records in this format."

I'm a little confused: are you seeing this in AE before you render out your completed work, or after? I'd guess the answer is "after".

At the moment, I can only recommend editing the footage as necessary, then transcoding it for use in AE. We'd need to know a whole lot more about your complete system before we could offer more meaningful advice.

The original file (.MTS) I was referring to was the file I was working on in After Effects. Not the file I created in a render.

Before you mentioned how you would "make something lossless like a QT in the PNG codec, and then transcode it into AVI." What's the best way to go about doing this?

From your editing application, export a quicktime movie in the PNG codec.
