Travis Stowellhow to track the mask but not the footage

i'm trying to do a glass crack effect while in the footage, the cam dollies out and zooms in, when i apply a mask to a duplicate footage and track it, while the mask transformation grows, so does the footage being masked.

how do i only track the mask and not the footage, keeping the footage the same size throughout the tracking?

If I understand correctly.

Place the masks on a solid. The tracking info on a null object. And parent the solid to the null object. Then use the solid as an alpha matte for the footage.

so i can understand all of what you're saying except for "using the solid as an alpha matte for the footage"
if you mean track matting, i've done it and it's not quite what i'm looking for, but i feel like i'm close.

So, here's a Screen Shot of what i have after following your instructions, you'll notice that i have two layers called "Final 1" which are the same clip, except for one is offset to give a proper broken glass effect.

I've created a simple shape for a mask to test it, and you'll notice that all that does is create a null mask that doesn't do anything. when i turn the visible view off of the top "Final_1", the shape turns gray (which is the color of my solid)

maybe i've done it wrong?

1) What type of tracker are you using?

2) Please provide a link to the original and tracked video or better yet, embed them in your next post.

just using the basic motion tracking, tracking position and size with a null object, then parenting the crack and solid with masks with the null aswell.

I think the issue is with the tracking results rather than the mask. I suggest that you use mochaAE for the tracking. Then export Corner Pin data from mochaAE. You will also want to export out Shape Data from mochaAE, to be used to outline the shape of the mirror.
