How to Achieve Text Box Effect
on Jul 22, 2013 at 4:33:38 pm

Hi Guys,

I am looking to create text boxes to be used in a video that are similar to ones this video:

I am hoping to create the text boxes in After Effects, with the same flashing line and typing effect and am wondering what you think the best way to achieve this is. Ideally, I'd be able to create the text boxes in a composition with an Alpha Channel and I could then import it into my Premiere Pro timeline to be placed in the right position on the video clips.

What would be the best way to approach this?

Thanks in Advance!

That's really easy. There are a number ways to make the box:
  • With a solid, then futz with horizontal & vertical scale
  • With a solid, then apply a rectangular mask
  • With a shape layer

In all instances, you merely reduce the layer's opacity. Very simple.

Thanks for the response Dave- I figured the box itself would be easy enough but am less sure about creating the flashing line and the effect of the text being typed- It's still probably quite easy but I haven't yet used a technique in AE that I think would help me achieve it. Would you able to advise on those aspects?

Well, there's a Typewriter text animation preset that's handy to use, and the flashing cursor could be another text layer with the opacity animated. I could only see it when the typing stopped. You'll just have to hunt around in all the characters to find that vertical character. It's gotta be there.

Have you looked at the word processor preset?

You can get that vertical line (pipe) by either typing SHIFT-\, or with NumLock on, Alt-0124. I find SHIFT-\ easier, and it's usually printed right on your keyboard.
