In AE CS5, is there a way to ensure that the default “save as” location matches the opened project, when opened using “file>open recent projects”?

I realise that “file>save” and “file>increment and save” will save to the correct directory for the open project, but I always use “file>save as” in order to add descriptive names to help track project file history.
“file>save as” always points to the location one last saved something to, rather than whatever is the open project.

Thanks

Forgive me, Graham, I can't remember. Are you a Mac user? If so, check out Default Folder X. It supplements file save and open dialogs and makes accessing frequently or recently used folders much easier.

On Windows, I make heavy use of the Recent Folders location.

Thanks Walter,

I’m on Windows 7.
Where can I find this “recent folders location”?

[Graham Macfarlane] "I’m on Windows 7. Where can I find this “recent folders location”?"

In the Save As... Windows dialog, make sure that Organize > Layout > Navigation Pane is on. In your Favorites (top item in the navigation pane), you'll see an item called Recent Places.

This lists the last 30 folders that you've written files into. Sort it by date modified to see them in the order you've used them.

Thank you for the explanation Walter,

This will certainly help on some occasions, but unfortunately wouldn’t fit my workflow all the time for two reasons:

The 30 files/folders strong list is not AE specific, which may not be enough at times when many non AE tasks are performed in between AE sessions.

The second issue is that the folder paths are not included (unless you hover the mouse over the folder to check each one). I use a template folder structure for every project I work on, so, for different projects, the folder containing the AE files has the same name “05_post production”. Trying to find the correct project folder in the list could become time consuming.

Ideally I need to change AE’s default save as directory from:

Last folder explicitly navigated to
To
Location of currently open AE project

Perhaps there is a script for this?

Sorry, I'm not sure of another way to do it.

You can drag commonly used folders into your Favorites in Windows Explorer for single-click access.

There are also several Default Folder X-like apps for Windows like Buzz Folders and Flash Folders, but I don't have a good recommendation for you there.

Your thoughts are much appreciated!

If I come across a way to deal with the issue inside AE I will post back here.
