Very simple question, After Effects CS6
on Jun 21, 2013 at 1:44:24 am

I was watching a video on YouTube on how to make an explosion. However, the video is not very helpful as the guy doesn't explain anything.

The part I am stuck on is at 1 minute 22 seconds when he makes a "patch" of the texture of the ground, and then he covers up an object with it. After that, he copies an object and is able to make it appear and disappear.

Here is the video:

Please help me guys!

At 1:22, he duplicates the layer. On the duplicate he makes a box sized mask on some empty pavement and moves that over the box. You do this so when when you blow up the box, when the explosion is gone, nothing will be left.

He quickly duplicated the main layer (by selecting it on the timeline and pressing command+D), then pressed Q to activate the Rectangle Mask Tool and dragged out a mask on a bit of the ground on that duplicated layer.

He then pressed V and moved that little rectangle selection of ground to cover the box.

Hope that helped.
