How to key only out-of-focus area
on Jun 6, 2013 at 2:06:31 pm

hi all, i have an image that has a foreground in focus and background out of focus. is there a quick way to key the out of focus area so i can manipulate it only? obviously i don't want to rotoscope. i'm wandering if there is a way to mimic how a camera determines focus by identifying contrast between pixels. thanks for the help.

Roto Brush may do the trick - it does take a bit of work but it's worth the time.

thanks but roto brush will be VERY time consuming and i don't know that it would work. i have a subject with a white shirt in front of a blown-out background. i need to separate to color correct each on its own. the latitude is, amazingly, there but i have to be able to blend them and roto brush is all over the place with the matte due to the white-on-white image.

it seems like there would be a way to mimic how a camera 'sees' contrast to autofocus a lens and use this as a matte.

Sorry, not really. You've undertaken a VERY tough project.

I don't know whether this will help you - I've never used it myself but it might help you out?
