I am in need of some advice for after effects, and I found this forum, so I thought i'd ask:
What I want is to get a smokey-looking aura around an object, I've got two layers, one with the background clip and another one with the object, keyed and matted, and my idea would be to place the effect in a layer between those two, and just animate it.
So, the ideal thing would be having smoke coming off a single point that I could move around. What is the best deafult effect or plugin for me?

Particular would be my go to effect for something like this(easier to animate & can use layers as emitters), but CC Particle world can also probably do what you need.
