daydream/ flashback transition

I've looked around but only found stuff on making the dreamlike look, not the kinda cheesy transition a la Wayne's World like you see here:







Does anyone have a suggestion on how to do this b/t clips as a transition? Thanks ahead of time for any help.

I'd use fractal noise(fractal has to be precomped) to drive a displacement map, then animate the displacement.

Must someday soon do a total training with AE so I can do more of this on my own.
