From what I am reading there is no way to do this...but I am hopeful!
I have a master project that has dozens of other .aep's imported. When I make changes to any of the original .aep's they do not update in the master project. With changes to assets I can simply "reload" them to see instant there any way to do this with imported .aep's?

Your fears are correct: once an AE project is imported into another project, it takes on a life of its own. If you make changes to the original project file, those changes DO NOT appear in the same project imported into another one. Likewise, if you alter an imported project, the changes do not appear in the original.

There is a third party app/script that does this, AE Project Sync. It has trial version, so you might want to check it out.
