Changing properties based upon the luma underneath the layer

Hi guys, what I'm after is a bit difficult for me to explain, so please bear with me.

I'd like to have a series of 3D planes, which flip front to back depending on whether the guide layer under that plane is black or white (animated - audio spectrum )... I'm trying to make a graphic equaliser where the bars are made out of planes which rotate around to show front or back...

I have absolutely no idea what the best way of proceeding with this is, any pointers and direction would be massively appreciated.

Many thanks for reading.

Are you familiar with the Card Dance effect [link]?
