I've been trying to get a nice slit-scan effect in AE CS6 through the "Time Displacement" effect
by using a ramp or a gradient from white to black as the displacement map
but the outputted result always has banding
i.e. it processes the displacement in "bands" of a few pixels
instead of each pixel line being independent.
Is there some way of solving this?
I see that the "Time Displacement" effect is 16-bit
but I don't know what the solution would be.
I can achieve the refined effect I want using a Processing sketch
but it's massively more time/work/effort/etc.
Here's a screenshot of part of what I'm talking about (@ 100% resolution):
I dropped the footage (1080p) onto a new comp.
Created a new solid. Added a ramp to it (white to black).
Pre-composed the solid. Added Time Displacement to the footage.
Chose the pre-composed solid as the map.
If I change the ramp start and end to shades of gray
the banding gets substantially worse.
