Making A Simple Sketch Twitch

Hello, I've been trying to find a way to make a sketch twitch that you see in countless commercials (like Lumosity) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfIbIsVRDcMIs there a simple effect to achieve this twitch? Or must you make multiple layers with very slight differences in the sketch/animation and then offset them every other frame or so? I'm actually using a text layer, so it's not technically a sketch, but I think you get my point (If the effect is even possible with a text layer)

Thanks for any help.

It is called a "boiling hold". And yes it is done by retracing the same frame 2-3 times. Each time will be unique in its own way. Then u just rotate beteween the 2 or 3 images.

Advice: do it at 12fps (pre comp) inside a 23.976 or 24fps comp. otherwise it happens too fast and looks like crap.

BTW when i say trace. You need to do it in photoshop or something... I prefer to do it with a pencil type brush in photoshop. To do it with a text layer will never look as hood as hand tracing it.

You can see my technique in action here on the title card about 6 seconds in.

Matthew Fuller knows whereof he speaks. The technique he recommends will yield the best results.

There is a quick-n-dirty method I've used for text or shapes that have a stroke.

1) Convert the type to shapes and remove the fill, add a stroke in the colour you want.

2) Add a group to the shape layer and move all the type into it.

3) Add a wiggle paths and tweak the values to taste.

There's also a much faster way - although it may or may not get the look you're going for. Use Turbulent Displace. Just animate the evolution parameter. Make sure the Size and Amount parameters are set to what you want - that may take a little fiddling, but it's really fast.
