How do I create fire type effects in a video
on Apr 30, 2013 at 2:08:34 pm

I was asked to try to create something similar to the first 30 seconds of this video, and I am not sure exactly how to do this. As a heads up, this is a religious video.

If anyone knows of a tutorial that would point me in the right direction, that would be great! I really don't know how to do much of any of these effects, so I am really looking for anything that will bring me closer to being able to create something like this. Thank you for your time, wisdom and guidance!

That clip looks like it contains a mix of particle effects -- Probably Particular -- and instances of 3D Stroke. There may even be some file footage of flames in it.

There are tutorials for making flames in AE right here on the COW, and many more elsewhere just a Google away. Videocopilot would be a good place to start.

Artbeats has great flame footage, and if it's still going, Detonation Films may have some for free. OR just shoot your own: after taking the appropriate safety precautions, cardboard soaked in strategic spots with lighter fluid works well in a dark, windless spot.

Flames are easy to loop with quick cross-dissolves.

Embellishing Dave's suggestions...

Some of the footage looks like the ink from here...

And also check out fire and other options here...

These are great prices for stock footage.

These Free Particles from VideCopilot might come in handy too.

I appreciate the links to the resources. The biggest challenge I see is how to make the image appear in the fire itself. I could use masks and a blend mode so that when the fire breaks so does the image, but I wasn't sure if there was some trick using a matte or something to do it with less work. I have not scoured the tutorials here yet, so I may find my answer, but I wasn't sure if someone knew off hand.

If I understand you correctly, using the fire as a track mask for your primary video image might be what you are looking for.

Thanks everyone for your valuable feedback. I think I have enough guidance to attempt to tackle this now.
