I'm attempting to emulate the transition in this video

it is the transition between the ubisoft logo and the sausage shot.... i just cant figure out how they did this... i really hope they didn't output to VHS and then made tape to tape edits to get this look.

It looks like a combination of a rapid horizontal wiggle effects (Google AE wiggle expression) and a glitch effect.Here is one of many places you can get the glitch effect.

that is funny. i was looking at this company yesterday. our IT guy brought back a couple samples from NAB. Rampant design tools make some great stuff.

Yes, I got a freebee for visiting their booth (light fx) and won another at the Media Motion Ball (flash fx). Add those to the 2 I already own (Film FX and Animated mattes). Real good creative tools.

is there any other way to do this inside of AE... i want to have something i can control and modify.

Well you can create a wiggle expression for the movement.

And using fractal noise that is masked might just do it.

[Tylor Larson] " i just cant figure out how they did this..."

It's a cut! The simplest kind of transition there is. The trick lies in the previous shot, and that can be done with a little noise, some distortion, and a couple of fast-paced position changes.

Dave is right, it's a cut with some effects that take the last shot out and some that bring new shot it. They can be all created in AE using a variety of techniques, look up TV Distortion, signal noise tutorials...anything that gives you a bad television image.

There's also a some plugins at AEscripts that create that look, if you have the money.

To get the colour i would reccomend something like this:

Layer 01 Original video (most lowest layer)
1) Saturation = 0 / make it black and white
2) Magic Bullet MisFire / make geometric distortion with slight animation
Displacement = 1, with Wiggler F=1, Magnitude = 0,3

Layer 02 Copy of original video
1) Transparency Mode = Color
2) Brigtness & Contrast / make bigger contrast
Contrast = +26.
3) Fast blur / make color shift
Blurriness = 80
Blur Dimensions = Horizontal
With Wiggler F=3, Magnitude = 30 / slight color shift animation
4) Levels (Individual Controls)
Red Output White = 3000 / enlarge red tone quantity in image
5) Channel Blur / reduce color cleariness
Red Blurriness = 15
6) Opacity = 95, with Wiggler F=5, M=5 / slight color fading animation

Slānis 03 / Adjustment layer
1) Fractal Noise / make horizontal lines "signal distortion"
Fractal Type = Strings
Noise Type = Block
Owerflow = Clip
Uniform Scaling = Off
Scale Width = 2500
With keyframes animate Offset Turbulence - to shift horizontal lines from top to bottom.
2) Fast Blur = 50 / blur the stripes
3) Transition Mode = Soft Light / make stripes partly transparent
4) Opacity = 20% / make stripes just a bit transparent

Layer 04 / Adjustment Layer
1) Compound Blur = 1 / reduce image cleariness some more
2) Magic Bullet Misfire Grain / make image a little bit grainy
Color Noise = Off
Amount = 20
Red = 30
Green = 35
Blue = 100
Softness (R,G,B) = 4

As for the glitch, the best way to achieve this is to type VHS noise on vimeo, download a video of some, unmult it in after effects, and simply layer it over the top. Hope this help
