Pretty sure I know the answer to this ("no!"), but is there a way to output a Z depth pass OUT of AE?

There was a trick with a legacy plug-in called Depth, but it's been discontinued. (I don't think it works with CS6).

As far as I know, Z depth has to come in from an external program, such as an RLA or RPF file output form 3DS Max or another 3D package. Once the information is in AE, it can access the Z depth information and use it. I haven't seen any script or plugin which does this, but maybe someone else has...

Well, I've never done it but I guess you can tint everything black and link a bright light to your camera... where do you intend to feed in this depth?
