Declan Smith3D camera track matching existing 3D layers

Hi

I have a comp in AE with multiple layers all in 3D space, with a camera and it looks how I want it. It's a view looking down an object and I have live action footage from above my actor which is a tracking reveal shot. I want to show the perspective shift of the 3D layers as the tracking happens.

I have done a 3D track on the live footage using the CS6 camera tracker. What I want to do is 'stick' my actor on the very top layer in Z space) of the already existing 3D stuff (it's like a ledge with lots of further detail at various z-depths). As soon as I go to 'create 3D camera' then I lose the perspective and I had on my existing work (clearly as I have a new Camera). So my question is given this, how do I get the original perspective of my original 3D layers, to fit with the new 3D tracked camera so I can then match the movement? In other words, in a perfect world create a solid where I want it and then plonk all my 3D layers there.

Your workflow is obviously far from ideal. You can try parenting the camera to a 3D Null and tweak it into place. Even then, you will likely have to tweak your 3D layers or camera lens/zoom settings to achieve your goal.

You may also want to have a look at http://aescripts.com/orient-world/ although I've not used yet, it may make your task easier.

Yes quite! I will have a look at the script, but if there is no quick solution I may as well reposition the 12 layers to the new camera / 3D space. This came from working on one part of the project in the absence of the other, so was just curious of there was a magic 'align 3D space' option. The orient world script definitely looks useful though.

Update:

Your suggestion of using Orient world was absolutely spot on 100%. Created the new camera & solid, selected it as a ground plane within Orient world, clicked apply and all my existing objects and lights etc are now exactly how I wanted them.

What's slightly ironic is that I went to purchase the plugin and realised I already had it!! Very much a 'wood for the trees' moment.

Thanks for your help, that simple suggestion has saved me hours of work.

I'm glad it's worked out well for you Declan. And many thanks for reporting back.
