So the time has finally arrived, with the announcement of a relatively cheap PC mobo with Thunderbolt native. Has time passed by the excitement about Thunderbolt, because of Apple's propriety nature, or is anyone going to think about moving to it when they build their next box?

When I upgrade my system in a few years (current system is new as of last year and going strong) I'll probably opt for it, if only because I tend to buy the highest end consumer motherboards available.

By then it may make sense to have my PCIe cards in an enclosure (RED Rocket, Blackmagic Decklink) to allow me to 1) rent them and 2) swap between laptop and desktop while still having a decent system with each.

In other words, probably not jumping on it immediately.

Actually this is Intel technology not Apple. Apple is just an early adopter.

Yes...I know it's Intel technology, but it appears that there's rangling going on between Apple and Intel going right back to the day Apple broke TB to the market - Thunderbolt appears to have been a joint technology project between Apple and Intel, although Intel owns the trademark. It seems that Apple, with their "sue them, and then maybe collaborate..." approach to technology, may have played a part in slowing down the broad usage of TB, although it's also partly Intel's fault for being controlling with their "cherry picking" of companies who can use it. As usual, it appears to be a he said, she said issue, neither company had their head wrapped around the licensing agreement, and the consumer loses.
