continuous oblong motion path with staggered items

Hi,

I need to move different objects in an oblong shape, not a circle. They should be staggered in distance and the motion would be constant so they would go around numerous times. It would be completely 2d. Is there a tutorial on this? I found some expressions for staggering objects following a null but quite honestly I don't even know how to get the null on a continuous oblong path.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

I would try creating an oblong mask shape. Create a keyframe in that Mask Shape, then copy the Mask, and paste it into the Position settings of your first object. This should give you your first object moving around the oblong mask. You should then be able to just copy that mask shape keyframe into your other objects, and tweak the timing of the keyframes. Remember that if you select all the keyframes, you can hold down the ALT key and slide them proportionally to each other in time.

To have them continue around the path, you need to just cut an paste the keyframes for as many repetitions as you want.

Thank you so much. That was actually exactly what I needed.

Is there a way to actually reverse the direction the object moves in? So, clockwise instead of counter clockwise?

You can change direction by choosing all your keyframes, right-clicking, and selecting Time Reverse Keyframes.

To refine that suggestion a touch further, I'd suggest selecting the animation keyframes on your object and adding a basic expression to them.

Alt click (on a mac) the position key stopwatch > hit the Expression Language Menu (little right pointing arrow in a circle) > menu option 'Property' > loopOut

That'll keep your object looping forever without duplicating keyframes all the time.
