Hi, I've been lurking and learning form this forum since I'm using AE for a couple of weeks.
Today I couldn't find a solution how to use an extruded 3D shape layer which would have a fill on the front from an image file.

The solution I found was to make a comp of the 3D shape layer and add the image in 3D just in front of it.
Then go the material options to set the 'Appears in reflections' to 'Only'.
Make sure the shape layer has a Reflection Intensity of 100%.

This way you can use the comp in 3D, while the image follows the perspective changes of the 3D shape layer. (parenting didn't work as the perspective got messed up)

So maybe someone else has a use for this technique as well. (or maybe someone else has a more obvious one).

If you're working with the Classic 3D Renderer, you can
1) Shift+Parent the Texture Layer to the Shape Layer
2) Ensure the Shape Layer is above the Texture Layer
3) Apply the Alpha Matte track matte to the Texture Layer
4) Then tweak the z-position of either layer such that the Texture Layer is in front of the Shape Layer.

Yes, that was for the classic 3D renderer the best solution I found, thanks! The solution I needed in the end was for ray-traced rendering.

That's a good too. Looks very complete. Must do some editing and so on to see if my technique holds up under all circumstances.
