In Andrew Kramer's video here: http://www.videocopilot.net/help/element/tutorial/basic/advanced_materials/
about 4:45 in the video

In the bit he talks about Cinema 4d, he just imports a single texture that's perfectly wrapped to the object.

How do you create just a single texture from multiple textures like that in Cinema 4d to export and have it be correct in Element??

I'm a 3DS Max user, but the way you do it in just about any 3D package is with a process called Unwrap UVW (UVW is a Max term which corresponds to XYZ in the world space). Essentially, you create your model, then you apply an Unwrap modifier to it, which gives you a map of all your shapes. You tweak it a bit to make sure that all the textures are separated, but on the same plane, then you send it to Photoshop (or Gimp, or your favorite paint program) and paint away. Sometimes you have to custom paint your textures, sometimes you can find free textures, then just cut and paste.

Thanks Joe!

So basically you're saying you create a map of all the textures that are unwrapped, then they get wrapped again in After Effects. If I don't need to edit it in photoshop for instance, can I just take that unwrapped file and apply it?

Hi Zach -

They get wrapped again in Element 3D. If you take a look "under the hood" at some of the textures which come with Element 3D (the more complex textures), you'll see that the single texture has multiple maps on it. Take a look at this demo on VideoCopilot:

http://www.videocopilot.net/help/element/tutorial/basic/advanced_materials/

When Andrew Kramer shows the texture map being imported, you can assume that when in 3DS Max, he did an Unwrap UVW, prior to sending off the OBJ. This created the "flat" files which then imported right in, and wrapped the jet. The hard work is on the 3D side, doing the Unwap UVW.

I saw that, and wondered how to do that in Cinema 4d. I've watched some other tutorials, but they've been pretty vague. He just makes it look so easy.

It's only easy after you've done it multiple times, and worked your way through a few tutorials, step by step. It's a relatively involved process which gets easier with repetition.
