Its a shame that whenever I try to use MP on my Z820, it never seems to work. Very disappointing. Im getting used to ignoring it.

I have a very simple comp consisting of 1 layer of Element 3D (which contains a OBJ sequence of simple domino shaped 3D models.)

Then there is a floor layer, a light and a camera.

I am using Elementary on the Element layer to create artificial shadows of the line of domino objects on the floor

I have 2- 2687 processors with 32 hyper threads and 64 GB of ram all dedicated to AE.

When I start the render it sits there for five minutes telling me its doing 2 out of 250 frames. No progress is seen on the timeline. I just stop it at this point since regular rendering seems faster.

Element 3D is not compatible with the Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing feature. That feature relies on using multiple CPUs, each rendering a separate frame. That model doesn't work when a plug-in like Element 3D relies on the single GPU.

Thank you Todd. That would explain my difficulty with it. No more MP for Element projects.

Tom, you may want to look at using the Spacebar for non-RMFS situations. This precludes having to jump in/out of the Prefs DIalog Window.

BTW, the same goes for other GPU-dependent things, like the ray-traced 3D renderer.

I'm doing this on the phone; did I really read that you're allocating all processors & RAM to AE? If so, that's very bad. There's a video on Adobe TV that has general tips on maximizing AE on a Z800... and they DON'T include using hyperthreading. Plus you don't any RAM left over for any other handy things that need to also run... like the OS.

There's a good blog by Todd on maximizing AE performance on the Adobe web site. May I recommend it for bedtime reading?

Thanks for the info everybody.

Todds clarification of the MP functions addressed the issue at hand.

Things running quite well.
