Hi folks,

I hope you can help with a little puppet problem I have.

I'm trying to create a rope between two moving objects that will just squash and stretch around them as the objects move.

So far my set up is to attach a null to each of my moving objects and link each of these nulls to their respective puppet pins.

My problem is, when I hook up the nulls, the rope image just stretches off all over the place.

I've tried using both a small image (well, pre-comp) for the rope and a full size pre-comp but both seem to have the same issues. However, I noticed that when I put the pins in the comp size pre-comp, the mesh still seemed to be working on the smaller image.

anyone got any ideas?

cheers

Moog

I'm having trouble understanding what's being animated and what should follow the animation... is it the rope or the objects?

without knowing what is attached to what and how are they linked it's hard to pinpoint whatever is causing you the undesired look. Can you post a Screenshot?

Hi,
thanks for the reply.

I've uploaded an example image to describe what I'm doing.

A & B = the objects (pre-comps) which are animated to move through the scene

C = the image of a rope (tried both as a small, image sized pre-comp and a main comp sized pre-comp) I wish to manipulate via the puppet tool.

D = the location of two null objects I've set up which have the position of puppet pins linked to them.

When I set up the puppet tool to start, it all works fine, but when I try to link them to the nulls - that's when the results become unpredictable.

hope this helps to explain.

in yellow you have two nulls? parented to A and B right?

You're linking the puppet pin via expressions and pick whipping each null's position?

If you're just doing that...you'll end up with a wrong value (since the null is parented and it's position value is the offset of it's parent and not it's screen position)

to link them properly you'll need to paste:

a=thisComp.layer("Null 1");
a.toComp(a.anchorPoint)

instead of pickwhipping.

That's perfect!

Thanks for the help there Cassius. I'll remember that in future.

Cheers
