Hi I am having trouble getting a successful 3d camera track in AE CS6 on any game angle football footage from a broadcast.

I'm wondering if there is any setting that might help successfully track the footage. I would like to use the tracking data to place Text and objects on the field to analyze action during a play.

The footage i'm using is all broadcast quality 720p 59.94 drop frame with a variable zoom that follows the play. I've used different plays with varying amount of movement and all have failed after the camera solve. I've tried most of the settings in the 3d camera tracker including "variable zoom".

I've started to think this might be better accomplished using Mocha, what do you think?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

It would help for us to see the clip in order to analyze the problem.

If you are trying to run the camera tracker of a football game where players are running around in the shot, you are not going to get a good track since it gets confused by all the motion. You would need to mask out the moving players.

If the camera is mounted and zooming you have even less of a chance of getting a track. The camera tracker needs parallax to determine the dimensionality of the shot.

But that just a wild guess without seeing what the shot looks like.

Hi Grayson,
It is possible that mocha might be able to get a good solve on the footage. It all depends on if there are some good solid planes to track throughout the shot. In the case of a Football game, you will want to track the ground and possibly the stands or walls.

mocha Pro and mocha AE versions 3 both have a 3D camera solver and you can check out the related tutorials here:
http://www.imagineersystems.com/videos?tagFilter=3D+Camera+Solve+Module&sor...

If you can post the file, I can also have someone from Imagineer take a look and see if mocha can help.

Best,
Ross

Hi Tom,
AE CS6 does not ship with mocha AE v3. Imagineer released mocha v3 products about 6 months after CS6 came out. There is an affordable upgrade path.

To view a chart that compares mocha AE CS6 and mocha AE v3.1 go here:
http://www.imagineersystems.com/compare-products

There are some pretty useful features not found in the AE bundled version including: 3D Solver, Lens Distortion Analysis, support for FCP and Motion, etc.

Best,
Ross

Good to know. Thanks Ross.

I tend to relegate any involved camera tracking with Syntheyes so I dont think I will need to upgrade.

[Tom Daigon] "Good to know. Thanks Ross."

While you're thanking Ross, he's thanking the Academy.

Mr. Shain and the team at Imagineer Systems have just won an Oscar for their work on planar tracking [link]. Congratulations to Imagineer, and thanks for all your work on Mocha!

Thanks for the replies. I'm unable to supply the footage due to rights issues.

Essentially I work for a company that creates sports highlights and I'm trying to create a workflow that will allow our group to create quick turn-around advanced telestrations for our highlights.

We currently use ORAD MVP and AXIS as our telestration systems that allow us to track any court or field in 3d and apply pre-made telestration graphics to the field, player, etc.

I would like to create a workflow that will allow for more creative custom animations to enhance our work with a turn-around time of 1-3 hours. Are there any solutions with AE or Mocha that you can recommend?

Are there any plugins specifically created to track playing fields?

Thanks again for the help

The only camera trackers I am aware of (Mocha 3, Syntheyes and Boujou) will have challenges with any in frame motion that is different from the camera motion. I mask out this motion to get a better track solve. I dont think that is a viable option with your footage, but without seeing it thats pure speculation. Good luck!

Hi Grayson,
If you'd like to contact us offline, Imagineer can sign an Non Disclosure Form to look at the footage and see if we can offer any help. This is quite common for us, so let me know.
