can't import .mov file into AE CS3
on Dec 30, 2012 at 12:52:23 am

I filmed on a Canon T3i and converted all my footage to ProRes to edit in FCP.

As I'm editing I notice I need to replace some sky in my footage so i wanted to come over to AE to do some compositing to replace clouds and such.

I'm on a MAC with QT 10, AE (CS3) and my footage is 1920x1080 and converted to ProRes using Compressor.

I go to Import the footage and get the error message "Can't Import file "06-Apple ProRes 422 (HQ).mov": unsupported filetype or extension.

I've done some research on this and tried converting the mov files to other formats but to no avail.

Can anyone be of some help on this?

thanks!

First troubleshooting step would be to install Quicktime 7. Quicktime X uses a totally different API (instruction set that allows other programs to interact with it) than previous versions. As it stands, AE may not have the ability to access Quicktime without installing a legacy version.

When I tried to install Quicktime 7.7 it would not allow me to due to already having QT10 on my system.

Do i have to uninstall QT10?

You may need a special installer for QT7 which installs it in the utilities folder: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923

More reading here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2213705?start=15&tstart=0

It is possible, I have 7 and X (10) installed concurrently on my MBP.

just installed ... I'll try it now.

as a Post Script ... I have the edited clip in my FCP timeline and want to send just that clip (not the WHOLE take/file) to AE because the file is about 2 gigs but the clip I need to edit is just a few seconds.

How do I get just the edited region to AE from FCP?

This may sound silly but ae might have a problem with the symbols and what not in the file name. Try renaming it without the "-" or the "()"

Another question, why not just use the original file from your t3i? Then convert the exported footage from ae to your prores format

Re: using original footage...I tried that. In fact, AE won't accept ANY footage at all ... No matter what format.
I'll try renaming the file as you said though I suspect since AE isn't allowing any video file, it might be moot to try.

I suspect some QT codecs might be giving me issues?

I think you need to systematically trouble shoot what's wrong with AE CS3.

-Does it import any file types at all? AIFFs, JPEGs, anything? Will it accept footage of any kind (not your current project but any video file)

-Have you tried restarting your computer?

-Have you tried punching your hard drive?

Best regards,

It will accept photos (JPEG, PSD, etc). It will not accept any type of video file.

Yes, I've restarted.

When I open AE ... I get a "failed to initialize MediaCore" error prompt.

frustrating.
