adjustmentlayer with mask doesn't allow drop shadow
on Dec 9, 2012 at 4:25:36 pm

I'm using a adjustment layer as 3D layer with a oval mask with magnifier distort effect. that works. I want to enlarge a part of a painting and move that in front of the painting. I also want the enlargement to drop shadow on the painting, just to stand out more (I will also use DOF for that purpose) but I can't get drop shadow effect to work. Also adding a light and turning on cast shadow and receive shadow doesn't work. What can I do? I want the enlarged part of the painting drop a shadow on the painting.

Hans

Apply Drop Shadow Layer Style.

1. Select your Adjustment Layer in the Timeline,
2. Right Click on it.
3. Go to Layer Styles and select Drop Shadow.

Alas this doesn't work.Maybe I should explain better.
I've got background image. on top an adjustment layer. apply 'magnify'to the adjustmentlayer. you get a circle with part of backgroundimage on top. I want a part of that cirle invisible so I use a elips mask. I want the resulting enlarged image drop a shadow on background image.
I've tried layer Styles. without luck.
I've tried Material options of adj layer Cast Shadows on. and backgroundlayer receive shadows on. Are there any other switches I should turn on? .can anyone help?

Hans

Here is an example of what I have created using the source layer itself instead of Adjustment layer.

Hans

I saw the tutorial and found a way to create shadows of adjustment layer with a small trick using two masks at a time.

Here is the file:

Hope this will work.

Well Vishesh, you found the answer to my problem! I'm getting a shadow now. at first it was a small line, but after moving one of the masks I could get a thicker line that acts as a shadow. With softening in the shadow effect and resizing the mask it's a proper shadow that moves with the top image. I haven't found a way yet to let the top image come out of the background; putting it all in a precomp didn't work, but that wasn't the actual question. if you know a way to let it come out of the background (fade in is always a possibility, but I mean scale from 100% to about 150% with a short fade in of about 10 frames)in 3D layer in Zspace, would be super of course. I will try myself as well of course.
Thanks for your help.

Hans

Glad I could help. I will try the second step(3d Zoom) tomorrow and will let you know if will be successful in achieving it.

Hans

I have tried the Zoom part by linking the opacity of both shadow layers to that of Adjustment layer.

Hope this will work:

Oke
I've tried your file and it seems to work, although the shadow is seen through the image in the first few frames but I think it can work. The whole workflow of getting this image with a drop shadow and a magnifying glass is quite a bit of work.
I was hooping for a one button solution, just switch on shadows and have that keyframed because I have to do this for tens of images, but this is a workaround if there isn't such a solution. But I certainly want to express my appreciation for your input Vishesh. thanks!

I don't know if you're still interested, but there's an easier way to do this.
Copy the image layer and ad a Magnify effect and drop shadow to it. This copy layer is on top of the original. Than make adjustments to your liking in the Magnify settings; for magnification, size, and to Drop Shadow on position, scale and orientation. you can animate the magnify effect by animating Center. (oh and important...set Magnify Effect blending mode to none!)

Oh and for S3D stereoscopic part; turn layers into 3D layers, move effect layer into Z-space and mind the edges for window violation.
