Exporting Mocha track back into After Effects.
on Nov 15, 2012 at 2:57:37 am

My first time to use Mocha AE, and it's eating my lunch. I'm just trying to track a plane of an iPhone and cover it with text. I've tracked the plane in Mocha, I copied to clipboard and bring it back to AE. I paste it on a text layer (to be seen on the iPhone). I can see the round Mocha corner-pin marks in AE, but it shrinks the text to probably 1% of its original size, and skews it (like a Y-rotation). And there's no controls to fix it in any way.

I've gone through a dozen tutorials. They all discuss how to track. Then they just say paste it back. I've done that, but I'm obviously doing something wrong. The track looks great, but I can't get it into AE. Any help is appreciated.

Hi Brute,

If you are using text, you will need to precompose the layer first, as a layer with different dimensions to the composition will be distorted with corner pin data. See here in the docs on how to do this:

Mocha is a very powerful but can be complicated to use if you dont spend the time learning how to correctly use it. Check out Google for tutorials. Its not something you can just open up and intuitively use.

[Tom Daigon] "Check out Google for tutorials."

Accck!!! We've had COW users who have been misled by a few horrendously misleading mocha tutorials on youtube. It becomes a huge task to have them un-learn the bad stuff.

I'd much prefer that we recommend folks to FIRST get a thorough grasp of mocha with Imagineer's own set of online tutorials before they venture out into the woods on their own. This will allow them to be able to discern incorrect information as well as to properly experience the varied uses of mocha when watching other folks provide tracking examples/solutions.

Martin and Roland,

Thank you for your replies. I've been working through the lynda.com tutorials, but wasn't aware there were tutorials on the Imagineer Systems website. (As for Google video tutorials, I prefer not to be trained by twelve year-olds, no matter how bright the kids are.) I'll work through this over the next couple of days and let you know if I still need help. Thanks again.

Lynda.com is an excellent reliable source for training generally speaking. For more Mocha training check out Curious Turtle dvds.

http://www.curiousturtle.com/79-paid-tutorials/imagineer-systems-mocha/71-f...

The Fundamental course is more detailed then even what Imagineer has to offer. And I dont think they have any smart 12 year olds on staff, since that seems to be an issue for you ;-)

Ha ha Roland. When did you start using the editorial "We" when speaking about your personal preferences and experiences? Unless you suddenly have multiplied yourself into a group of people, it sounds a bit patronizing. ;-)

Ignoring your presentation, you make a valid point about the internet. Generally speaking, there are great sources of training (Video Copilot) and not so great sources as well.

In another response I shared another good choice for Mocha training that "I" have found to have great courses (Curious Turtle). Their Fundamentals is better then anything I experienced even on the Imagineer website. :D

Hi Tom, I'm sorry if you found my post patronizing. Over the years, there have been a number of COW users who have been misled by very poor mocha tutorials on youtube. I know that there are excellent tutorials on youtube but it's not sufficiently prudent to ask folks to reach into that domain when they are new or relatively new to mocha.

The time and effort required to 'un-train' a misled COW user is quite substantial where mocha is concerned.

Here are a lot of free mocha training links:

mocha Fundamentals: 4 hrs of free training. You can optionally purchase and download for a very fair price:
http://www.imagineersystems.com/mocha_Fundamentals

View all mocha training:
http://www.imagineersystems.com/videos?tagFilter=%25tutorial&sortBy=Newest

You can browse videos by tagged subject to find specific info.

mocha online documentation:
http://www.imagineersystems.com/support/Documentation/

Martin Brennand has done an amazing job of keeping this online documentation up to date.

Mathias Mohl/Mamoworld:
http://www.imagineersystems.com/videos?tagFilter=mochaImport&sortBy=Newest

Really excellent tutorials and AE script.

Lastly, you can purchase training from Curious Turtle. Anything from Ben Brownlee Heusner is recommended:

Enjoy,
Ross
