Easy way to create concentric ring of shapes?

Just trying to create something like the attached pic but built out much more and programmatically. Was wondering if there was an easier way to build this out. Was doing an Add>Repeat and changing the settings but I know that's a bad way.

And if I wanted to make them act as lights (on/off in different designs) I'm assuming Id make them a mask and animate white and black shapes behind yes?

Thanks for any help and/or tips on this.

I would say that the easiest way to create such a ring of shapes is using Adobe Illustrator. Short of that, Photoshop has the ability to put type on a path (as does Illustrator), so by using a typeface which has shapes (dingbats, in the typography parlance), you could quickly type the shapes onto a circular path, then repeat it, or resize it to what you want to achieve.

Joe, AE's Text Tool has a Path option too. :-D
