In your professional opinion, who makes the best, most comprehensive and understandable AE mac tutorials for watching on DVD or via a subscription on the web? We're shopping for good training bundles that take you from the first time seeing the interface, all the way to complex motion tracking and 3-d comps. A live teacher coming in, or taking a week off to go to a school, is not in the cards here, so what "canned" training program would you recommend?

I think AE needs more than one source, because it is quite complex in itself, not to mention when you add 3rd party plugins.
I would start here on the COW - plenty of tutorial for basic stuff and more complex ones. Adobe is also a good place to get basic information. For more advanced tutorials, aetuts+, videocopilot and the 3rd party plugin sites. This should get you started.

Lynda.com has great tutorials and is fairly cheap. ($25 a month/$35 a month with the exercise files)

Another good way to start is to buy the AE manual and run through it.

For starters, Allbetsareoff tutorials are good to understand basic things. One can start learning all tutorials from the starting.
Aharon Rabinowitz has explained many basic effects pretty well.

Two more suggestions:
Total Training -- they have both DVE and online, believe
Chris and Trish Meyer's AE books. Sometimes it just helps to have a book in your lap. They come with footage & project files, too:

I think they may do stuff for lynda.com, too... don't hold me to it.
