Hi CC,

I'm working on a comp where I have to bend the contents of a mirror. However, since the mirror has an edge I need to keep the "flag effect" from disconnecting back and forth over the edge.

I'm currently using FreeForm AE which works great but I can't seem to control the edge so the edge of the mirror is unnecessarily wobbly.

What can I do to control that so it looks like the warp from inside is going outside the edge/boundary of the mirror, but the edge stays intact?

Would really appreciate any suggestion. Thanks!

Share the project file with me via Dropbox. Make sure to collect files. Invite me to share the Dropbox folder. Use chris@mettle.com

I will see what I can do.

You might want to check out using a displacement map. You can animate a black and white map for a ripple and alter it so the edges remain still. http://library.creativecow.net/articles/hodgetts_philip/displacement.php

I looked into that one but I have the mirror at an angle in the room so I would like the warping to come out (which I can accomplish). However, the edge starts floating when I push the depth values. The displacement map stays flat. Looks great, but I need something that pops.

Thanks for the recommends though! :)

Can you duplicate layer and use Track Matte for reflective surface only? That should leave edges as they are.

Hi Mato,

That sounds like a clever idea. You're probably right. Chris from Mettle was real cool and helped me with my comp so I'm currently adapting the basic layering and lighting strategies he put together and am kind of wrapping my head around that for the meantime.

I'll keep that technique in the back of my head in case things get more complex though.

Thanks again!
