Can't Substitute Imported Solid (from C4D) Layer with Image

Hi. I'm a newbie here so I'll try and be to the point.
Using Cinema 4D v12 and AFX CS4 on a Windows 7 box
I'm trying to put a graphic on a 3D object that's part of a Cinema 4D animation. I followed along to the GrayScale Gorilla tutorial that detailed how to render out scenes using the Composite tags, etc from Cinema 4D to After Effects.
So far so good, as I got all the attendant layers, folders, etc.
The problem is that in After Effects, when I substitute my graphic for the animated plane rotating around the ball (hold down ALT, while dragging it over the layer), it doesn't show up. The layer name changes (from "Solid" to the name of my Graphic) and all the keyframes remain from the solid layer, but it doesn't actually substitute!
I'd be grateful if anyone had any idea what's going on... many thanks in advance.
