Displacement Maps Problem
on Sep 3, 2012 at 5:07:48 pm

Hi all,

I'm using a photoshop drawn displacement map to move a close up picture of someones face, almost creating the sense that it is 3d. The problem is whenever I import the image of the face, then the displacement map of the face that i've made in photoshop, it ends up being in the wrong place once I put the displacement map effect on.

I have the right layer selected and it set to luminance but every time the displacement map is off to one side of her face instead centered. Even if I move the displacement map layer in after effects so it lines up with her face perfectly it still will not seem to work.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong or know a better way of creating this effect? Its pretty much like the effect from the Kony 2012 video like this https://vimeo.com/38726389

Thanks!

Check that your displacement image and the image of the face are the same size and that the "displacement map behavior" option is set to "center map". However, I'm not sure the displacement map effect will work for the effect you're trying to achieve.

FreeForm is good for that type of effect because it's a mesh warp effect rather than just a displacement of pixels to fake distortion. It's not included with AE, you have to purchase it, but the standard version isn't too expensive. HTH

Yeah had both images the same size and those settings set, but still couldn't get it aligned. I've done it successfully on a single clip which made the face move very slightly which is what I need, just so it makes people feel the illusion of 3D. The problem is the displacement layer seems to have a mind of its own so only aligns on some pictures. I must be doing something wrong on import i think...

Precompose the displacement map layer and use the precomp. This way you can tweak the alignment of your displacement map.
For true 3d displacement Free Form can help, or even better FreeForm Pro.

Here's a tutorial on 3d displacement using Free Form:

Hi Glenn

I might be missing the point here or stating the obvious but the main 3D effect on the Joseph Kony edit is achieved by multi-planeing a few cutouts.

I'm fairly new to this platform so sometimes I get my terminology wires crossed but displacement mapping in my experience usually means a 'fake' 3D effect applied to a 2D image using a continuous tone black and white source as a reference ( very good for water effects )

If its the multi-plane effect you want just import the PS file as cut outs on different layers / arrange them in 3D space in AE / add camera / then animate camera.

Theres plenty of good tutorials on this if you need them -- all you need to do is checkout use of camera in AE on Andrew Devis's stuff on this site / Video Copilot tutorials on their site or just surf Youtube

Generally you should have the displacement layer the same size as the image. As others have mentioned there are center/stretch options in the displace effect.

One possibility is that you've imported the photoshop image as a composition with 'retain layer size'. This will crop each layer to it's bounding box, thus can make your displace map and your image different size even if they're the same in photoshop.

I did quite a big project recently using these techniques. Using displacement you can't 'rotate' around very far, but adding other layers can help sell the effect.

Here are some examples from my project. Most of them use flat layers, but the two portraits use displacement:

Thanks for the help guys, think I got my head around the problem now!

Thanks Ted, I'll look into freeform it seems like a step up from what i'm doing at the moment.

The displacement technicque we are using with the parallax effect in kony as well, as it adds a little bit more depth and tricks your eyes into thinking its super slow motion camera. Got it looking pretty good so far!

Those animations are amazing Jon, great job! Its pretty much the same as the effect we are going for too!

That was some great work Jon, very impressive(made me cringe a bit thinking of the time it took), really appreciate that you shared that with us.

Hi....

....slightly off-topic addition but does anyone know why I'm getting a line of html code instead of a link to Jons work please ?

What I see is a time-line slider of the type that sits below a streaming video and a line of code like this above it ---

3D still animation WIP from Jon Bagge on Vimeo.

Also can I use this code as a link in some way -- not working for me so far .... atm am totally puzzled by this

It's weird. When I posted it yesterday it looked fine to me, but now my post has code instead of the embedded video.

You're quote of my post though has the embed working..

Hi Jon

Yes odd .... I reckon its a one-off .... a corrupted file on the Creative Cow server or something ..... anyway been able to access the work now and very nice too - also your main reel.

BTW - if you dont mind commenting was wondering if you generated the sparkle on the words 'Merry Christmas' with Particular or by some other method.

All the best

Chris Brett
