Is there any way in AE or with the help of a script, to have AE import a file and also copy it to a previously set location? I am constantly using files from multiple locations but would like to just select the file on a certain drive and have AE copy it to the folder where I have everything for my project. That way I can just send someone that folder and everything will be there. Everyone in my office accesses AE projects from a network drive and it would be easier to have everything always be within the project folder. I know I can collect after the fact, but that can lead to duplicate project files and elements within one folder tree.

I understand, but thats an "after the fact" tool. I want to be able to collect as I import. Not after. Because lets say I have 1 element already in the project folder thats 2GB, then I import something thats on my stock footage drive without first copying it to my project folder, then I collect now I have 2 copies of the 2GB file plus the stock footage, Id like to be able to just import the Stockfootage and have it "collect" when I import.

try this
var exebat = new File("x:/testdir/test.bat");"w");
exebat.writeln("xcopy \"source.mp4\" \"x:/test/newfolder\"");

This creates the .bat file form the adobe script editor
my problem is trying to find a way to execute it
you can also use xmove

when I figure it out, will post here
great question for automation..
