Rec 709 to XYZ - After Effects vs OpenDCP vs Resolve Lite

Hi everyone,

I have a 1920x1080 24p Prores 422 HQ color corrected in Rec 709. I need to make a DCP out of it.

I am seeing 3 ways of converting Rec 709 to XYZ:

1. Importing the ProRes 422 HQ into After Effects and changing the color space to DCDM X'Y'Z' (Gamma 2.6) 5900K (by Adobe) -> Export Tiff Image Sequence 16bit. In OpenDCP Version 0.0.26, unchecking XYZ conversion.

2. Importing the ProRes 422 HQ into After Effects and exporting Tiff Image Sequence 16bit without any color space conversion. In OpenDCP Version 0.0.26, checking XYZ conversion.

3. Use Resolve Lite to apply a 3D LUT to convert from Rec 709 to XYZ. Export from Resolve as Tiff Image Sequence 16bit. In OpenDCP Version 0.0.26, unchecking XYZ conversion.

What's the most accurate conversion? Is OpenDCP Version 0.0.26 XYZ conversion using a 3D LUT?

If so, am I right to assume that OpenDCP's conversion is superior to After Effects' conversion?

Lastly, how does OpenDCP's conversion compare to Resolve's?

Thanks so much for your help!

I'm curious myself. The CIE X'Y'Z' conversion matrix is well known, and then you add some tweaks for the reference white and 2.6k gamma and the conversion should be near the same. There may be some ever so slight differences, and perhaps some quality differences in the algorithm, so it makes me curious as to which produces the "best result".

We usually export straight to a DCP compliant JPEG 2000 sequence from AE. You can get the plug-in here: http://www.fnordware.com/j2k/

Hi Angelo and Tero - Many thanks for the feedback and suggestions.

I will try the JPEG2000 plug-in and let you know how it goes!
