This one has me stumped. I find that when I track footage, it starts off great. After about 30 frames it starts to slow down, then starts to crawl. If I pause the track and restart, the same things happens - goes great for awhile, then slows way down. The really odd thing is that if I switch over to another app while the track is running, it never slows down!
Anyone have any ideas?

What are you using to track? There are lots of trackers out there.

It could very well be the nature of the footage you're tracking. Is it long-gop footage like h.264, mpeg or an mp4?

Since they don't contain complete image information for each and every frame -- only at the footage's internal keyframes -- AE may have to reinvent the missing information and THEN do the track.

Long-gop footage may have small file sizes, but it can be a real pain.

But if that was the problem why would it fly through the track when I switch away from AE to another app?? That is the part that has me really stumped. For this particular comp I am using a sequence of DPX frames, so long GOP isn't an issue

I know this is an old thread, but I just started a project where I'm doing a lot of (simple) tracking using the built-in tracker and I have the exact same experience. Granted my footage is mp4, but here also it starts of really quickly then gradually slows down.
And indeed, if you switch to another app, it doesn't slow down! I guess this is a good "workaround" for now ;)

It's not a good idea to not watch the tracker while it goes through its paces. The benefit of such an interactive tracking session is such that you will be able to stop a track has gone awry, move back to the last good frame, then proceed with tracking - this is much better than simply completing a track but having erroneous tracking results.

Obviously. Who says anything about not watching the tracker?
I can have multiple windows open on my screen so I'm still watching the tracker while clicking off to another window.
And it's not like I want to have to do this, but the bug in AE forces me to. If I didn't move focus off of AE, my tracking would take days, not hours.
