Rotating objects round null facing forwards??
on May 28, 2012 at 4:13:38 pm

I have a null in the middle of three objects (all in 3d space) and need to rotate them round the null (by parenting as normal) but so that they stay facing FORWARDS. (see image)

It would be great if someone could tell how how this would be done. Thanks in advance.

If it looks good, look at it.

All objects can be forced to always face the camera. It is called auto-orient, and I believe can be reached by right clicking the layer and choosing transform > orient.. something like that.

Hi mate,

There will be a better way of doing this but if you are rotating an object around a null you could apply the following expression to the objects y Rotation.

transform.yRotation-thisComp.layer("Null").transform.yRotation

Just insert the name of your null where it says "null" in the expression.

You will have to rotate your layers y axis individually so they all face forward properly. Also this will only work if the anchor point is centred to your object.

I'm sure there are much better ways to do this but that's my fix.

Cheers,

Andy

There may be more complicated ways that will work with more complex parenting setups, but the set up you recommended is the one I would recommend in general.

+1 :)
