Can't See Lightning Effect?
on May 25, 2012 at 4:39:38 pm

I'm new to after effects.
I can't figure out how to see both my footage and lightning effect at the same time in my composition. I have all the "fx" buttons selected. I have a feeling I'm missing something obvious.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

If you can post a screenshot of your UI, that might help us help you.

Since you're new to After Effects, I'd recommend the following link, in which Adobe's Todd Kopriva pulls together some important introductory materials:

I especially recommend the Video Copilot "Basic Training" series that Todd links to.

You are looking at the layer viewer (showing the footage), not the comp viewer (showing your composition).

If you want to apply Advanced Lightning directly to a piece of footage, make sure you check the "Composite on Original" checkbox in the Advanced Lightning effect controls.

Another option is to apply Advanced Lightning to a separate layer (over black) and use a blend mode like Screen or Add to composite it over the footage below.
