Macbook Pro 17 hours to render basic video!! How does an 8 core Mac Pro compare to the 12 core?

Hi,

I've been really stressed out that my good old Macbook Pro with 4GB of RAM is no longer adequate for working with After Effects and I desperately need to upgrade. At one point a simple 3 minute video with basic 'CC glass' and 'Sharpen' effects said 174 hours to render!

I understand that the 12 Core Mac Pro would be faster that the 8 Core, but the extra cost would be an issue, I'm in two minds whether to go for the 8 Core and save up for a while longer and get the 12 Core. Can anyone offer any advice?

Also, this is the spec that I added to the basket to work the price out, does this spec look OK to start off with? I know that I can add to and upgrade in the future should I need to like adding more RAM etc., is it possible to upgrade from 8 Cores to 12 Cores?

Thank you in advance :)

More than enough for any high-end needs but later add more RAM and a SAS or extra SSD hard-drive for working files.
Im more curious as to what your rendering to get those numbers?
Do you have the NightFlight test file?
If you can download that, render and post our times.
There could be something wrong with your file or your system.

I would wait a couple of more weeks and see if Apple announces new SandyBridge Xeon bases Mac Pros.

I think that the main source of the problem was that the original Quicktime file that I imported (4GB is size) was used multiple times within the same composition, although I had trimmed down each instance of the file.

I also duplicated the same adjustment layer multiple times (approx 40 or even 50 times), also trimmed to the length I required, with Twitch effects on.

Plus, a few instances of a Lens Blur effects, only short instances with a layer mark and opacity flashes on them.

Plus an overall CC Glass and Sharpen effect, which I turned off for the render.
Which one of these do you think was the main cause?

No I've never heard of NightFlight, what's that? My Google search only gave me results for a nightclub in Moscow :)

I really do love good design - http://www.splurj.com
