3d camera projection from VIDEO, not a STILL... Possible??
on Apr 6, 2012 at 7:52:54 pm

Hey guys, so I have mastered the 3D camera mapping technique in after effects, projecting a 2D still into a 3D environment and yadda yadda from various online tutorials.

I can't seem to figure out if the same is possible using video as a source. I am looking for a way to take a piece of film footage and recreate the environment in 3D space so I can create a custom camera and "reshoot" the scene.
Initially I started by using Boujou to get planar tracking data from the video. From that I set up the scene geometry. But now I can't figure out how to project the textures onto the 3D geometry and keep them there while my new AE camera animates through the scene.

Is it possible? Because I have found literally nothing written about it, or any online tutorials....

Thanks,
Chris

I haven't tried it, but I would think the theory would be the same, with two subtleties related to motion: your projection camera would need to be animated to match the scene's camera, and the geometry that receives projection would need to be animated to match the scene as well.

Small misses on either of these may upset the illusion, and you may be quite limited in how you can move the render camera.

Thanks Walker, I am still in the process of trying this (hitting many speed bumps along the way). My goal is to take the long tracking shots from Kubrick's "the Shining" and roughly reconstruct parts of the Overlook Hotel.

I'm astonished that there isn't more written about this. If it works, it sure could be a powerful tool.

Best,
Chris

Most of the heavy-hitting compositing like this is being done today in Nuke, which has some great 3D, geometry, and UV tools built-in.

hey Chris,
Here's a tutorial on how to do that:

You can project the video, but you can also precompose your projection leaving all effects/position outside the comp. You'll then be able to make whatever animation you want inside the comp and it will be projected. Good luck!
