any way to customize AE keyboard shortcuts???
on Mar 21, 2012 at 8:48:23 pm

Just wondering if there's any way I can customize some keyboard shortcuts for After Effects.

For example: instead of ⌥⇧⌘Y for "New Null" or ⌥⇧⌘C for "New Camera" I would rather have my own keyboard shortcut that allows me to use only two as opposed to four keys on the keyboard.

Does this require a script and if so, which one or where can I get hold of one?

Thanks very much in advance.

There's a scipt that came out for CS3 that would do it. It should still work.

I'm pretty sure there's a section on custom keyboard shortcuts in AE's online help; just use the search term keyboard shortcuts and it ought to show up.

I can appreciate that you'd want to change them, but I don't know if I would.

Here's why: if you happen to use AE on a different machine, one that DOESN'T have custom keyboard shortcuts, it can get pretty confusing.
Unless, of course, you become an AE power user so insistent on custom keyboard shortcuts that you carry your custom settings with you, save the current settings for the new machine, install your own settings, and replace the machine's former settings when you're done.

All things considered, it sounds easier just to use the standard ones.

Here's infomation on modifying keyboard shortcuts in After Effects Help:

That page includes a link to the current version of the script that John mentioned.

I was getting really frustrated about this as well, and a script solution sounded clunky. Luckily I kept searching and found Aharon Rabinowitz's tutorial here:

http://library.creativecow.net/articles/rabinowitz_aharon/AE_Shortcuts/vide...

The file location has changed since then, but a simple search for "After Effects Shortcuts" in the windows toolbar found it for me.

For the record, I wanted to change the easing shortcuts to something I could access without looking down at the keyboard -- moved them to 1,2,3 on the num pad, much better.

Nope.

You can modify existing keyboard shortcuts, reassigning them to different keystroke combinations, and you can run scripts to streamline things via keyboard input, but you can't invoke effects.

The reason: there are 80-bazillion of them including ones developed by third parties. If there were shortcuts for one, there'd have to be shortcuts for all... and frankly, ctl-opt-shift-) isn't very meaningful to me. It's like learning a new language. And I don't know if you'd have enough fingers on your hands to invoke some of the more esoteric stuff.
