I've created a standard 3D cube in AE (CS5.5) which looks fine in a normal lit environment, but if I throw a light onto it, it looks like some of the edges are not aligned correctly (although I'm CERTAIN they are!). I've applied Alpha Add to the 6 layers that make up the wall as advised by another AE user, but this doesn't help.

Here's a cropped screen cap of the problem I'm getting: http://tinyurl.com/6vlfzpu

As you can see, at the rear of the cube, the light from the AE spotlight is showing up what appears to be a misaligned layer.

For anyone interested, I created a no frills very basic cube and light AE project (697k) where you can check exactly how I set the cube up. You can download it here: http://tinyurl.com/6vlfzpu

What am I doing wrong?

My apologies, I put the wrong link into my post above for the AE project. Here's what it should be:

In the Material Options, for all cube_wall layers, turn Ambient and Specular to "0%", Diffuse to "30-40%" and Shininess and Metal to "100%"

Thanks for the reply, Tudor, but other than making things a little on the dark side, it had no effect.

Here's another cropped screen-cap after applying the changes you advised:

Here's a copy of the AE project with the changes applied that you advised:

I created a cube using Plane Space- from Red Giant. That is in theory a perfect cube, but I still get the same result as you did. I set the shadow map to maximum- still the same results. WEIRD! Either the problem has been there before and I did not noticed it (and I did quite a few projects with 3d boxes build out of layers, and some more complex shapes) or something has changed in CS5.5...
Tod, Walter, Dave... anyone else?

Well at least I'm glad it's not just me!

Thanks, Tudor.

Mike.

Set the blending mode for the layers to Alpha Add. See the description near the bottom of this page.

Hi Todd,

As explained in my first post, I had already done that.

Oops. Sorry. That's what I get for reading too fast.

Just an update. I managed to solve my particular problem above by setting the cube layers material options to cast shadows = on.
