Hi guys,

I have a proxy problem :)

I'm creating proxies of my AE comps for smoother playback in PP, but it's still laggy. It's not the proxies that are the problem per se, but the AE comp on PP timeline. Perhaps a Dynamic Link issue

I'm re-timing some clips on my PP timeline using AE via dynamic link i.e. "replace with After Effects Composition". I would think that a simple retime done in AE wouldn't be a problem for PP to playback, but it is... hence the proxy creation

Crucial points:
  • ALL of the footage in PP is in ProRes 442HQ and sits on a Raid drive
  • This footage plays in PP without any issues
  • AE comp proxies are ALSO ProRes 442HQ and on the same Raid drive

Interestingly - If I take the AE comp proxy file (a .mov proRes as I've said) and place it directly on the PP time, it plays just fine and snappy...

...but the dynamic linked file using the SAME proxy will alas not

Any help?

Many thanks

Um, render out video in AE? It's ProRes HQ, so the images won't degrade....

If I have to I will, but this does seem like a poor solution to a problem that ought not to be there

Do I need to tweak any media cache settings? Because if I take a clip in PP and "replace with after effects composition" and do NOTHING with it - the clip will not play in PP. Just the sheer fact that it's an AE composition means that it will be laggy....

... this can't be right - I must be able to improve my AE preferences somehow

No, you're fooling with time, which neither AE nor Premiere appreciate. Just bite the bullet and render.

Sorry, I think you're mis-understanding me

A proxy IS render is it not? So Neither PP or AE need compute time based effects

To be clear - This is nothing to do with time manipulation

Also, I said that a clip replaced with an after effects composition inherently has poor performance in PP before ANYTHING has been done to the composition, EVEN when the composition has a proxy file attached to it
