I am considering upgrading from CS4 to CS5. A lot of the projects I get are recycles. I.e., I will have to re-edit a project I've already done in a different language. So I use all the same assets, AE files, etc. If I upgrade, will those old CS4 AE files be compatible in the newer version?

After Effects can open projects created with previous versions, within limits. For example, After Effects CS5.5 and later can open and import projects from After Effects 6.5 and later.

It doesn't go the other direction unless you use this script:

After Effects CS5.5 can save backward one version, to a project that can be opened by After Effects CS5. See this page:
