Poor render output AE 5.5 (text opacity, noise, off timing)
on Jan 30, 2012 at 3:09:28 pm

Hi,

I am working on an after effects composition set HDV/HDTV 720x1280. The images that I am working with are illustrator layers.

It all looks fine in the preview window but when I output I am having some strange problems:

1. The opacity of text seems to be effected by camera moves in AE. So when the camera moves the text appears not to be at 100%, which it is set to in the composition (please see screenshots below).

2. There is some noise on the lines of the AI layer drawings.

This is in the preview window in the middle of a camera move:

This is what the same image looks like in the output:
3598_outputscreenshot1.png.zip

3. In one output the timing of things was a bit off from what they were when previewed in the sequence.

I have tried outputing with multiple codecs (ProRes 422, 4444, and animation). The output frame rate always matches the composition frame rate (29.97).

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

How are you viewing these rendered files? The timing issue may be due to this [link]. There have been quite a few people recently on the forums who've been having a problem with playback and that resolved it.

As far as the opacity issue goes, are you rendering with OpenGL? (Don't.)

Do you have "Draft 3D" turned on in the preview window? (It's the cube with a * next to it in the timeline). If this is ON, you won't see effects such as lighting and depth of field in the preview, which WILL appear when rendered. Might it be possible that the letting isn't actually translucent, but just over-illuminated by a light?

1º: could also be due to you having motion blur ON for the background and OFF for the layers.

2º: Are continuously rasterization turned ON for those ai layers?

3º: perhaps a framerate mismatch for one of those codecs?

my 2 cents...gl

1. The opacity issue did turn out to be a result of the background being set to motion blur and the text not.

2. Rasterizing was already turned on. The noise problem was fixed when I re-imported the ai file as separate layers retaining their size... no more noise.

3. I didn't experience this problem again. May have been an anomaly.

Problem solved. Thanks for the input everyone!
