Best computer for using Adobe After Effects???
on Jan 27, 2012 at 1:38:23 am

I’m looking into buying a computer to edit videos on it, doing animations, etc, on After Effects and other Adobe applications… I’ve seen some of them, and want to know your opinion in the following things:

Which of these is MORE important in my case? Processor, RAM or GPU??? I know, the three of them are important, but which is the most??

In processors, is it better Intel or AMD? In GPUs, NVIDIA or ATI?

In general, which would be better, HP, Sony or Lenovo desktops?

My main choices so far are:
1. HP AIO 420 1045 – Core i3 – 6 RAM – With Intel graphics media accelerator HD2000

2. Lenovo AIO B520 – Core i5 – 6 RAM – NVIDIA 1GB

3. Hp Pavillion AIO 610 1260 – Core i5 – 8 RAM – ** – HIGH PRICE

4. Sony VAIO ??? – i3 – 6 RAM – NVIDIA – HIGH PRICE

5. Laptop* Sony VAIO – i7 – 6 RAM –ATI RADDEON – HIGH PRICE

6. HP AIO 220 1022 – AMD Quad Core – 4 RAM**

7. HP P71180 – i7 – 8 RAM **

* I wouldn’t really like to buy a laptop… I’ve never had one, cause I’ve never needed to take a computer with me… and i have a question: Is there any problem if I use it 8 hours a day?? Wouldn’t that harm the battery, or something???

** Don’t know about the GPU of these ones

And about the processors, I am not sure either if they’re first or second generation…

Hope you can help me.!

After Effects renders on the CPU, not the GPU. Your graphics card doesn't matter at all for most After Effects work (excluding specific third-party effects which are accelerated by the GPU).

Premiere Pro, on the other hand, is accelerated by select NVIDIA graphics cards -- see the tech specs [link] for more.

After Effects works best with multiple processing cores and lots of RAM.

Of these machines, the desktops with i7 processors are the most powerful, but they could benefit from a RAM upgrade. If you get a quad-core i7 processor, you should consider doubling the RAM.

Best is 3GB RAM / core. You can get away with 2GB. Take in consideration 1.5GB at least for background processes and the same for other apps (so 3GB extra).
